Elder John "Johnny" Howard Bowlin

March 6, 1940 - September 24, 2016

ELDER JOHN “JOHNNY” HOWARD BOWLIN, age 76, Bristol, TN crossed over the Great Divide to greet his Savior Jesus Christ, his blessed Hope, on September 24, 2016.

Elder Bowlin began his life on March 6, 1940, in Scott County, VA where he grew up on a farm which he loved, and later left his humble home to work in the textile industry to raise his beloved family. He was a humble man and a friend to those in need. Most importantly, Elder Bowlin was a devout Christian who loved to spread the “good news” to all that he met. He began his Christian walk on March 1, 1959, when he, along with his brother, Jim, was saved in a revival meeting at Blue Springs Church which was officiated by Coba Carter and Rader Ketron.

Throughout his life, Elder Bowlin would often testify, “I was under so much conviction that I couldn’t wait to get to the altar to be saved.” From that day forward, Elder Bowlin spent hour upon hour studying the Word of God and attending services with an avid passion to learn about the “Great Big God” that he served. In addition, Elder Bowlin had a passion for singing, which he shared along with his brothers and sisters’ family quartet on many occasions. As he grew in the Lord, Elder Bowlin answered his call to preach the gospel, and on a Tuesday night, September 18, 1984, he was ordained by the Eastern District Association of Primitive Baptists at Blue Springs Church. During his ministry, Elder Bowlin was the pastor at Miller’s Chapel, and later became the pastor at Blue Springs (Beech Grove). As he travelled and preached at many churches, Elder Bowlin remained a humble servant who was tempered with humility, kindness, love, and wisdom that only Jesus could provide. His desire was to live his life as Jesus lived.

Elder Bowlin was known for many aphorisms and his talent to touch the lives of many. He would often say things like, “We serve a great big God,” “I’m so glad I’m saved, I don’t know whether to run, jump, or shout,” “I wouldn’t trade what Jesus has for me for anything in this world,” or “I’m looking forward to that Great Big Meeting in the air.” These aphorisms would put smiles on people’s faces, but everyone knew he was sincere about them. Elder Bowlin was happiest when he was in church and he would encourage the congregation many times with some of his favorite verses from John 14:1-3. Elder Bowlin cherished these words and held tight to this promise during his lifetime. Throughout his trials and tribulation, Elder Bowlin never failed to give praise to the author of his faith and destiny, Jesus.

As the family rejoices Johnny’s crossing, we would like to share his final words of encouragement he gave just a few days ago: “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” Blessed be the name of Jesus!

Elder John Bowlin was preceded in death by his father, Claude Bowlin; mother, Mary Bowlin; and brother, William Bowlin.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Bowlin, 1 daughter, Kim Bowlin; 2 sons, Brad Bowlin and Matthew Bowlin; 2 granddaughters; 3 sisters, Jean Wilson, Sue Johnson, and Brenda Horton; 2 brothers, Jim Bowlin and Kenneth Bowlin; and many wonderful nieces, nephews and extended family.
